Administration Considering Sending Masks to All Americans
White House officials are looking at a plan to send masks to every American household.
NBC News reported that no decision has been made and the proposal has not reached President Joe Biden yet. The COVID-19 Response Team is still evaluating the logistics.
The network news noted it is unclear how many masks would be sent to each household and whether they would be made of cloth or be disposable. And it remained unclear how much the mask mailings would cost.
“There are a range of options on the table to help protect more Americans from the coronavirus and encourage people to mask up, but no decision has been made,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
Biden has asked all Americans to wear masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus for the first 100 days of his administration.
The Trump White House had shot down a plan to mail reusable masks to every household in 2020 over concerns it could create a “panic.”
The Washington Post had revealed that a news release about the plan to ship millions of masks to Americans — five for each household — was drafted but never finalized.
“There was concern from some in the White House Domestic Policy Council and the office of the vice president that households receiving masks might create concern or panic,” a Trump administration official had told the newspaper last year.
