The ongoing controversy on whether or not children should return to in-class learning has devolved into a partisan political issue, as powerful teachers’ unions exert pressure on President Joe Biden’s administration to keep kids at home in virtual classrooms that have been widely criticized.
On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control quietly updated their guidance on how children should be returned to the classroom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been several steps ahead of the government on issues pertaining to COVID-19, ripped the CDC a new one with his response.
“What the CDC put out, 5:00 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, I wonder why they would do it then, was quite frankly a disgrace. It would require, if you actually follow that, closing 90% of schools in the United States,” DeSantis said, according to the Washington Examiner. “We are open, we remain open, and we are not turning back.”
The newly-released system is a typical, government-issued color-coded system that assigns colors with various meanings to districts depending on what their current COVID-19 transmission risk status is.
For instance, districts coded in red would have the harshest restrictions, only allowing certain grades back into the classroom. Green-coded districts would have the least amount of restrictions. There are several other colors or phases in between.
DeSantis, who can absolutely walk the walk when it comes to bragging on COVID-19 pandemic management, gave a clear example of why the new guidelines go against science — which is what Democrats claim to follow.
“We’ve been open the whole time, since August. We had kids doing camps and athletics and all that over the summer, and we’ve been in-person as much as anybody in the country, and yet, we are 34th out of 50 states and D.C. for COVID-19 cases on a per capita basis for children. Thirty-three states have more cases per capita than Florida children, and many of those don’t have a lot of in-person instruction in school.”
Shortly after, DeSantis revealed the aforementioned reason why he believes Biden’s CDC is not able to follow the actual science, because it boils down to contributions and the power that teachers’ unions have over the current administration.
“The only reason that is not happening across this country like it is in Florida … It’s one reason and one reason only. Because the Democratic Party puts the interests of education unions and special interests ahead of the well-being of our children and of our families,” the Florida governor said.
It also highlights what was so fantastic about having Donald Trump as the president. He literally wasn’t beholden to any union or organization, though he often won their support just by treating them right and doing what was best for America.
We have to applaud DeSantis for taking a stand on the issue. He’s actually putting children first and politics last, and I have a feeling that won’t soon be forgotten by his grateful constituents.
