In late March, a medical director in New Rochelle, New York, tried to raise awareness about the dangers of New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s deadly nursing home program, but the governor’s office ignored him.
On March 26, Dr. Elaine Healy, vice president of medical affairs and medical director for the United Hebrew retirement group, called into BlazeTV host Mark Levin’s radio show, anxious to get news out about Cuomo’s dangerous nursing home scheme.
The policy required nursing homes in the state to admit coronavirus-positive patients who had been released from the hospital, and it is believed that thousands of elderly New Yorkers died as a result of it. Despite the fact that it was common knowledge at the time that nursing home residents were among the highest-risk individuals suffering from the pandemic, it remained in effect for more than a month.
Healy told Levin on March 26 that “I’d like to put to your attention, as well as the attention of the listeners, what is about to happen in New York in terms of nursing homes. Both nursing homes have been required by the governor to admit COVID-positive patients that are still potentially infectious into their facilities, putting our families, our long-term care community, at risk.”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Levin said, interrupting. “Are you trying to deceive me? I’m serious. Why would you send anyone infected with this virus into a population capable of killing them?”
“I’m looking at a directive from Andrew Cuomo and [New York Health Commissioner] Howard Zucker, dated March 25, that is ordering nursing homes… it says that nursing homes’must comply with the expedited receipt of residents returning from hospitals’… they are deemed appropriate to go into the nursing homes from the hospitals, and we cannot discriminate based on the presence of COVID,” Healy explains.
She went on to say that the governor’s office and local health authorities had “no cooperation on the ground,” and that the governor was instead handling the crisis by edicts and orders.
Healy forwarded the details to her umbrella organization, the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, which condemned the action the next day. The Wall Street Journal reported on this assertion.
“Admitting patients with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 infection poses a clear and present danger to all nursing home residents,” the organization said.
Cuomo and the state Department of Health, on the other hand, either declined or ignored the advice, resulting in the deaths of thousands of elderly New Yorkers.
